Profile
High Performance
Penn AC High Performance Group strives to train and develop elite level men and women by providing them with opportunities to compete at the highest level in the sport of rowing. Penn AC has a long history of producing national team rowers and scullers that have competed at the World Rowing Championships and Olympic Games. Penn AC will continue to maintain this tradition of success.
Penn AC is a member of the Schuylkill Navy which is located on historical Boathouse Row in Philadelphia, PA. The High Performance Team trains along the Schuylkill River, which has been the breeding ground for much of America’s past Olympic Rowing success. Penn AC athletes train year–round and travel to compete at US Rowing Regattas, Senior National Team Trials, and National Selection Regattas and Camps. Philadelphia provides these athletes with excellent opportunities to pursue full or part–time careers or attend graduate school programs at many of the local colleges or universities.
Success of the Penn AC High Performance Group stems from the endless dedication to practicing, training, and racing each day with teammates who are all working towards one goal: competing for the US National Team. Penn AC will provide you with a team atmosphere and level of competition that you will not find anywhere else. We are one team, one club.
Masters
The Penn AC Masters program is a diverse group of rowers – women and men, former Olympic and National Team members, former college and high school rowers as well as rowers who began the sport as adults.
Penn AC Masters range from rowers competing at local and National levels to those enjoying the recreational benefits of rowing.
No Experience Necessary
Penn AC recognizes that many people in Philadelphia and the surrounding communities travel past Boathouse Row and the Schuylkill River regularly, see people in rowing shells on the river and think to themselves, “I would love to try that.”
Penn AC’s Learn-to-Row (“LTR”) classes are open to the public, and help to open doors to rowing on Boathouse Row. This introductory program is designed for those who have not rowed and who want to give it a try for the first time.
Club membership is not required for program registration and participation.
Participants must be at least 21 years of age.
Applications close the day prior to the start of each class in each session.
The six week program is designed as a stepping stone class for those with no rowing experience. The classes will focus on teaching proper boat handling, the basics of rowing/sculling, and boathouse etiquette. The first of three levels, this introductory program progressively builds participants’ competency and skill on the water as an avenue for new masters athletes and club membership.
Upon completion of the initial six week session participants want to continue rowing, Penn AC hosts continuing instruction for athletes looking to take their experience and make it part of their exercise routine or lifestyle.
Eligible Participants
All Learn to Row participants must complete a waiver and release of liability and attest that they are able to swim prior to starting the Learn to Row program.
Completion of Level 1 session is a requirement for registration in Level 2.
Completion of Level 2 session is a requirement for registration in Level 3.
Additional sessions may be added if there is sufficient interest and coaching availability.
A Note About Class Size
If a class does not fill in a way that will permit it to run, registered participants may be asked to change the dates and/or times to accommodate an optimal rower/coach ratio. A full refund will be provided for classes that are canceled and/or if a participant cannot attend rescheduled class dates and/or times.
