Profile
The People’s Baseball League is an adult, co-ed, recreational, fast-pitch, wooden-bat baseball league in New Orleans, LA, founded in 2016. Our mission is to make baseball available to anyone who wants to play regardless of background, skill level, age, ethnicity and national origin, gender and gender identity, sexuality, class, and religion.
Let it be known in the spirit of community and friendly competition, in pursuit of well-being in body, mind, and soul, the good people of New Orleans do form a union and league among those of us who share in the love for the great game of baseball. Played in the streets, grass, and dirt of this Crescent City for at least 156 years, baseball, as of late a spectator sport, is a game meant to be lived and breathed by the people.
For unknown and insidious reasons, it has been accepted as a given that when men reach a certain age (and women for their entire life), baseball would become somehow out of reach, that the joy of taking to the field and playing hardball was only for professionals, for youth, for watching only. We reject this notion.
We will gather on Sunday afternoons, playing the game how it was meant to be played. Pitchers and catchers and fielders and hitters and umpires calling strikes and balls. Nine to a side, we will throw, catch, swing, run with sweat, dust, and spit. Win or lose, we will build camaraderie and shared purpose: out there on the field, ready for the next pitch, waiting for the ball to be hit our way. We will cheer, challenge our teammates, and congratulate our opponents on their best efforts. The People’s Baseball League is open to women and men of one like-minded pursuit: to embrace and do honor to the ancient and noble game of baseball.
