History
3 Score softball originated back in 1969 with five or six men who began to meet regularly at Frank Tack Field in Clearwater to “throw the ball around” and take some “cuts” at the plate. These men enjoyed the exercise but missed the thrill of the game, so they began to recruit players by visiting homeowners’ associations and mobile home parks. Soon, they had 15 players and began to play games with five outfielders, five infielders, and five hitters, essentially three teams of five. The number of players continued to grow, and by about 1974, the 3 Score Softball Club was officially formed.
Today, the club comprises about 200 men and women, all aged 60 or better….hence the name 3 Score. The oldest players are in their 90’s! This is a cross-section of those working and retired Florida residents and snowbirds, doctors, plumbers, lawyers, carpenters, police, firefighters, politicians, teachers, accountants, etc. And, it’s not just players from Clearwater. They come from Tampa, Largo, Tarpon Springs, Dunedin, St. Petersburg, Oldsmar, Safety Harbor, Palm Harbor, Land-o-Lakes, Holiday, and New Port Richey. Snowbirds represent LOTS of states and Canada!
While the thrill of real competition is definitely there, the main drive of the club is recreation and fellowship.
Divisions of 3 Score Softball Club
3 Score Softball Club comprises two different divisions, The American League and the National League.
The American League members are all aged 60+. They play three times a week…Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 9:00 am. Monday and Wednesday are official league games and Fridays are pick-up games. Depending on the time of the year there are four to six teams. There are about five, ten-week segments during the year and teams are redrafted for each segment.
The National League members play three times a week on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 9:00 am. Teams are redrawn each Monday. Fridays are pick-up games. Play is a little more casual but no less competitive!
New members are welcome and added to teams on almost a daily basis. New members should show up at the fields by 8:30 on gamedays and ask anyone for one of the league officers. If you want to play make sure to bring your bat and glove!
