About The AGBL
The Austin Gay Basketball League (AGBL) was founded in February 2010 and is Austin’s first and only gay-affiliated basketball league, and at the time was the only gay-affiliated league in the state of Texas.
Our mission is to offer the Central Texas lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community and our straight allies the opportunity to experience and enjoy recreational basketball in a competitive, inclusive, and affirming environment.
The AGBL was created to provide a welcoming environment to all lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people who are interested in playing basketball, building friendships, and giving back to Austin’s community. AGBL promotes an athletic environment free of discrimination. LGBT-friendly basketball players are encouraged to come out and join us as well. Beginners are always welcome!
The first pick-up game was held March 28, 2010 at the basketball courts near Walnut Creek Park. We had 6 attendees, 4 male and 2 female. AGBL has seen rapid growth since its inception, and we continue to add many new members each month.
Also, the AGBL currently has a select team of competitive individuals that compete on behalf of the Austin City Basketball League called the AGBL Flames. The Flames’ inaugural season was a huge success! The team captured the City League Championship with an impressive 8-0 record. The Flames will continue to compete in local City Leagues and travel to tournaments across the nation to represent the AGBL.
