Profile
Masters Rowing (ages 23 and up) has experienced unprecedented national growth over the past decade. The San Diego Rowing Club has long been active in Masters Rowing and a leader in the growth of our racing sport.
The Masters Program has compiled numerous National Championships and FISA World Championships over several decades, in all boat classes and age categories. Long time member and legend, Kearney Johnston, started it all, winning two events at the first FISA Veterans Regatta in Bern, Switzerland in 1974, bringing home gold medals in the single scull events.
The SDRC Masters Program is set up for men and women to train year-round. SDRC competes at major regattas throughout the year, including the San Diego Crew Classic, the US Rowing Southwest Regional Championships, USRowing Masters National Championships and the Head Of The Charles regatta in Boston, along with other regional regattas during the spring, fall and winter. Our Masters rowers often head to international competitions – such as the Canadian Masters and FISA World Masters Regattas to race against the best.
SDRC encourages post-collegiate athletes to continue their rowing experience / careers. The recent addition of the “Pre-Masters”category for athletes under 27 years of age enables athletes to smoothly transition to racing after graduation.
