New Players
I wish I could better convey one thought: You ARE READY for camp!
Over the years, I have had so many players ask if they were “good enough” to attend camp. So many players think that they need to achieve some level of hockey proficiency before attending. Lord knows how many more have just not bothered to inquire, and just continued to toil away on their own.
If you are just starting out, here are some things you should know:
1) We have novice players at every single camp. You won’t be the only one.
2) It is better to learn things the right way from the start, rather than learn bad habits that you will later have to correct.
3) Our coaches are very patient, and are accustomed to working with players of all levels. They will help you!
4) The other players at camp remember when they were starting out, and are very supportive. There is no shame in your struggles and falls. This is the best possible learning environment for adult players.
5) In one camp weekend, you will experience drastic improvement. You are at the steepest part of the learning curve, and will improve more than the more experienced players. Come with an open mind and good work ethic, and we will transform your game.
Experienced Players
Our camps and curriculum are designed to accommodate a wide variety of skill levels. Unless you played hockey at a high level (e.g. college varsity team), you have probably not experienced the type of coaching that you will get at a Weekend Warriors camp. So even if you have been playing this game for 20 or 30 years, you will learn more about the game, and become a better player. Whether you have been playing for 3 years or 30 years, our coaches will challenge you to take your game to the next level.
Women
The participation of women in ice hockey is growing rapidly, and most women never had the benefit of formal coaching in a youth league. Weekend Warriors can help. Our curriculum is designed specifically for adults, and works equally well for both men and women. As a result, women may attend any of the Weekend Warriors camps. In fact, nearly 20% of players that attend our camps are female, proving that Warrior Souls have no gender boundaries. Not only that, but we have several highly qualified women coaches on our staff.
Goalies
Focused Training for Goalies
Goalie is the most difficult and important position on the ice, so why do so many coaches tell you to “Just get in there and stop the darn puck”. OK, truth be told, there’s not a hockey coach on the planet that says “darn”, but what do you expect us to write on our website? We think you get the idea.
Weekend Warriors provides you with an experienced, dedicated goalie coach to work on improving your game between the pipes, adding new skills as well as sharpening those you already have. Movement, positioning, puck handling, angles, various save types and the mental side of the game are all addressed within the context of your dominant style (stand-up, butterfly or combo).
We use video analysis to help you assess your strengths and weaknesses. You will see for yourself which elements of your game need the most work. You also get to take what you learn and incorporate it right away by facing shooters in both drills and game situations.
You will be able to ask specific questions, and get the coaching and feedback you need on your particular game.
Our goalies come back year after year. Our goalie coaches are constantly providing these WW vets as well as first time camp attendees with new tools for the goalie toolbox, in addition to finding new ways to use video to analyze the technique, movement and positioning of our goalies.
