Profile
We are a recreational softball league open to players age 50+. We play year-round on Tuesdays & Thursdays mornings in the Twin Cities west metro area. From May to mid-September, we play outdoors and have teams, schedules, and standings. Then, we transition to Fall Ball, which is a casual pick-up game. In November, we move indoors for Domeball.
West Metro Senior Softball is the place to be if you’re over 50, love a good game, and like to have fun! We’re organized into two divisions to enable players to participate at the level that makes sense for them. Everyone gets plenty of playing time. We don’t hold tryouts for our league, but you can stop by any game day to try us out! When registrations are open, you can complete your registration online on our website and pay the fee.
Our Northwoods and National Divisions: Depending on your softball background and current activity level, you may start in our Northwoods Division. This is our “Recreational Group” and is made up of folks that either have less softball experience, haven’t played for a while, or want a less competitive experience. It’s also a good place for folks who played in the past but need to work into game shape. The ages of most NWD players range from 60 to 80, averaging 75 years. If you’ve been playing ball at a higher level recently, you may play in our National Division, which comprises younger players (50 – 80, average age ~65 years). Many ND players are on traveling tournament teams and are used to competitive games. In both divisions, players are assigned to teams for parity, and each team member is assigned to be the manager for the session.
The Summer Game Day Schedule: We play every Tuesday and Thursday except holidays from May to mid-September. Each day starts at 9:00 a.m. with batting practice and warm-up. The first of 2 games begins at 10:00 am, and the second game usually ends by 12:15 pm. Some play one day a week, some play both days, and some sporadically. You can play when it works for you.
We play three sessions from May until mid-September; each session is 6 or 7 weeks. Session One starts in May and goes to mid-June. Session Two goes from Mid -June to the end of July and Session Three runs from August to mid-September. We make new teams each session so players get to know each other. We celebrate our summer with our annual league BBQ picnic and one-pitch tournament at the end of August. Through the summer, we track game results and division standings. At the end of each session, we “crown” each division’s Champs and prepare for the next session.
Lunch and Socialization. We are a non-profit Social Organization. We have a picnic lunch every game day after the games from May to August, as explained elsewhere on this website. Those who participate in the picnics take a turn providing food once per summer in groups of 4 to 5. There is a sign-up book at the park, or your group can sign up online by following the link on the home page, where you can get more information. The fare may be hot dogs, burgers, pizza, pulled pork, tacos, sloppy Joe’s, or whatever the day’s volunteers decide! Thanks to a volunteer “pop person”, we also have soda pop available daily for a nominal charge.
What to Bring, What to Wear. All you need to get started is a glove. You can use good league bats until you decide to ramp up and get your own. No uniforms, just dress for the weather and active exercise. No metal baseball cleats are allowed. Shoes with rubber cleats, turf shoes, or running shoes with good tread are fine. Bring water in the summer as no fields have fountains available.
Fall Ball + Domeball. After Session Three, we go right into our Fall League schedule in Eden Prairie. Fall Ball continues until it is too cold to play, usually near the end of October. This is a schedule of casual pick-up games. In early November we start our winter Domeball league at The Academy of Holy Angels StarDome in Richfield. We provide more information on Fall League and Domeball as those seasons approach. Have more questions? Contact us from the front page and we’ll get back to you!
